This picture was taken in 2000 at my neice's wedding when she was 78 years old. She was 90 when she died.
My mom had 3 girls, 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was from a family of 13 and emigrated from Europe to Canada in 1952 with my older sister, who was 7 when they arrived. My mother's first job in Toronto was operating a sewing machine in a shoe and purse factory on Spadina Ave.
My mother was very skilled in the hand-arts. When she came to Canada she brought a portable Pfaff sewing machine and a pair of scissors. When we were growing up my mom made all our clothes; hand-knit sweaters, hand-embroidered dresses, coats, pants (my first bell-bottoms!), party dresses, bridesmaid dresses and eventually my wedding dress.
From my mother I learned my sewing and knitting skills; starting with barbie doll clothes and eventually sewing my own clothes. To my mother I owe my love of fabrics, yarns, and shoes.
We will miss her.
