This was my first ever rag quilt and I agonized over whether to use batting or not. I finally used a very low loft cotton/poly (not sure which but I bought it at Quilting Confections in Windsor ON, and I am very happy with my decision.
I also tested 2 rag snips; The Heritage VP7 (expensive but fabulous) and the Fiskars 5" spring action snip. Hands-down the Heritage were the best. They had no problems cutting through 4 layers of flannel and 2 layers of batting.
This quilt took a while to make; I've been working on it since September, and I can't imagine using lower quality flannel or using regular scissors to do all the cutting. After all its our time that's the most valuable when we make any project, isn't it?
